MARKET COMMENT for TUESDAY 23RD OCTOBER 2007

HEADLINES

Good Morning ShareCrazies

This Morning in London shares made strong early gains, with heavyweight miners pacing the FTSE-100's advance. Gains in heavyweight mining issues helped fuel the FTSE bounce back supported by solid production news from BHP Billiton (BLT) and positive news on Chinese growth. A senior research official with China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) predicted that GDP in the country is likely to grow by around 11.5% in 2007 and about 11% in 2008. BHP Billiton issued its Q1 production report overnight in Sydney. The world's largest diversified resources group said output at its iron ore mines in Western Australia and at key coal projects in Australia and Colombia reached record levels in the first quarter to September. BHP Billiton said strong demand underpinned the record production as capacity was increased. In reaction, BHP Billiton shares added 29p at 1,793p, while Antofagasta (ANTO) added 25.5p at 806p, Vedanta (VED) gained 41p at 2,095p and Rio Tinto (RIO) took on 92p at 4,142p. At 9:40 the FTSE-100 was up 58.4 points at 6,517.7 with the FTSE-250 ahead 184.7 points at 11,362.6.
