This Morning in London major shares opened higher, extending yesterday's advances following gains in the US and Asia. Shares in Scottish & Newcastle (SCTN) were higher early on, up 15.5p at 781.25p, after Heineken and Carlsberg's announcement of a recommended offer for S&N of 800 pence-per-share, valuing the UK brewer's issued share capital at about £7.6 billion. At 9:35 the FTSE-100 index was up 69.9 points at 5,945.7, having closed 266.5 points ahead at 5,875.8 yesterday, with the FTSE-250 index up 13.9 points at 9,870.2.

BROKER RECOMMENDATIONS

Cazenove reiterates outperform on HBOS (HBOS).

Seymour Pierce has downgraded Sopheon (SPE) to hold from buy and reiterates buy Serabi (SRB).
The broker has underperform on Cobra (CBF) and says buy China Shoto (CHNS) (believing they are oversold) and buy Hot Tuna (HTT).
Seymour Pierce has issued a Coal Conference, in which they reiterate buy UK Coal (UKC) and say buy Cambrian (CBM), ATH Resources (ATH) and EnergyBuild (EBG).

Last Night in New York stocks reclaimed higher ground for a second day after the White House and the House leadership unveiled a tentative economic stimulus package, lifting an equities market recently battered by worries about an economic recession. The Dow Jones rose 108.4 points to 12,378.6, with 21 of its 30 components ending higher. The S&P gained 13.47 points to 1,352.07, and the Nasdaq added 44.51 points to 2,360.92.
