MARKET COMMENT for THURSDAY 27TH DECEMBER 2007

HEADLINES

Good Morning ShareCrazies

This Morning in London major shares pushed higher in early trading on the return from the two-day Christmas break. Retailers are likely to be in focus as investors try to guess the strength of Christmas trade and the Boxing Day start of the sales yesterday. Fears of bleak trading on the high street look to have eased after a last-minute surge of shopping, although concerns over profits remain after widespread discounting of stock in the run-up to Christmas. Figures from Footfall, the Experian-owned market research company, showed an increase in shopper numbers of 6.8% on Saturday, climbing to more than 20% on Sunday as shoppers hunted for bargains. At 8:45 the FTSE-100 was 9.1 points firmer at 6,488.4, with the broader FTSE indices all higher too.
