FINANCIAL TIMES

The Lex Column:
*Leveraged loans backing - amid all the brow-beating over structured credit, the vast stockpile of plain old loans stuck in development hell has been almost forgotten. But that paper mountain is slowly shrinking - in the US, at least.
*Cautious Macquarie - it really is a different world Down Under. While US and European banks unveil ever bigger write-offs, Australia's Macquarie Group is still on a roll.
*Vodafone (VOD) on the up - Vodafone makes consolidated operating profits equivalent to about 60% of its tangible fixed asset base and thus will be exposed to regulatory threats.
*Wal-Mart (WAL) rebounds - after stumbling around in an attempt to lure higher-paying customers with trendy items, Wal-Mart has gone back to what it does best - keeping inventories tight and costs in the cellar.
*Money market funds - there's motherhood and apple pie. And then there is the pledge by money market funds not to allow net asset value to fall below face value.
*Investigating subprime - the US state attorneys-general are on the march again, plunging into the latest Wall Street scandal with subpoenas and allegations of malfeasance.
*European reinsurers - reinsurance stocks get hammered by hurricanes but they weather financial crises just fine. Swiss Re (SWI) and Munich Re (MUN), two the biggest reinsurance companies, last week reported strong results.

*Cable & Wireless (CW.) gives the incentive sceptics more ammunition.
