THOUGHT FOR MONDAY 3RD DECEMBER 2007
From top share author MALCOLM STACEY

Hello Crazy Gang,

I'm afraid to say that there are sharks around in the Big City pools. People who will exploit us - or even worse swindle us out of hard eanred money.

Now in my experience the vast majority of people in the City are completely respectable and honest. There is no doubt about that. I've had nothing but fair dealings from brokers, registrars, public relations officers, the journalists and the whole kit and kaboodle.

But just as in other walks of life, there are the bad apples. Be on your guard always for people who promise the earth. If something seems to good to be true, then it very probably is.

Now when you are swindled or misled or loose money in some other unfair way, it might tempt you to be less than scrupulous yourself. You may think you have to make up your lost money somehow.

But I very much advise against any bending of the rules. For example, if you think you've been overpaid by a broker or a registrar, I think you should query the transaction.

Also, we should all declare our full profits to the Revenue for capital gains tax deductions. And we should mention it to our brokers when we think they've got it wrong in our favour.

There is no point in building up a nagging conscience. If we think we've had money or shares we're not entitled to, it could haunt us for years if we don't clear the matter up.

Honesty is the best policy everywhere - and the City is no exception. Even if some of our co-denizens of the City are not always whiter than white, it will be pay us to be. Rock on!
