Hello, share shifters,
Don't fall in love with a share. Yes, I know you've heard it before. But it's the biggest mistake we make.
They try to tell us that only amateurs make this particular goof. Don't you believe it, chums. The big cheeses who manage share trusts, and insurance companies and investment banks also fall in love with shares from time to time.
I did it with Northern Rock (NRK.L). And if years at the great game are a way of avoiding such mistakes, then I can only say that long experience didn't work in my case.
Falling in love with a share is a kind of arrogance. We chose it. It must be a good bet. We're not daft, are we? Well, probably not. But the story changes fast in Crazyland.
A company which makes something everybody wants, suddenly finds that it's great idea or product is taken over by a much better bit of techno magic. You have time to see a change of fashion coming. But you continue to believe the company you punted into is the bees knees.
Well, may be it was last week. But it got left behind by the world of innovation. You should not still be in that company. After all, selling an ailing share is only a small mouse click or two away.
But you think the falling share will turn very soon. And as the weeks turn into months and then years, you still sit on this dwindling but beloved pile of value. Until one day the share isn't even worth the commission of selling it on.
Don't become infatuated with your own shares gang. Love sometimes doesn't last. Rocking on!
