THOUGHT FOR WEDNESDAY 16TH JANUARY 2008
From top share author MALCOLM STACEY

Hello Crazy Gang,

By way of encouragement, here's something to think about. Even on the very worst days for the Footise and all the other share tables, there are always some stocks which are doing very well.

If you need to make money to live on, even in the bad periods, you can still do it. It just requires a little more effort, that's all. (I say "that's all", but hard work has always been difficult for me, which is why I was attracted to give up the day job and move into private share dealing in the first place).

Any road up, there are always stocks which go against the flow. And if good news befalls a particular share, a poor state of the market will not slow it down.

Of course, some shares are more prone to a sudden rise than others. One way of enjoying such a rise is by a take-over. Sadly, they're as rare as hen's teeth these days, due to a shortage of opportunities to borrow money.

But there are other ways to help a share through the roof. Companies searching for oil can really rocket - if the black stuff is found. Mining companies can also strike it rich.

Yes, it sounds like a fairy tale for oil companies to hit a gusher - and though it doesn't happen quite as dramatically as that - oil companies can suddenly become very lucrative.

Any road up, for whatever reason, we can suddenly look at our the daily total for our portfolios and discover that the balance is a lot bigger than it was yesterday. Usually one lucky share has hit the jackpot.

So don't despair if the genereal market is down - you may have one or two beauties that buck the trend - big time. Rocking on!
