THOUGHT FOR CHRISTMAS 2007
From top share author MALCOLM STACEY

Hello Crazies,

Christmas is a time of year I try to forget that shares can fall as well as rise, and I expect them to motor up nicely till the New Year.

But after about a week into January, I'm afraid we often see a festive hang-over set in and shares drift. This has something to do with the big stores.

We all expect them to report big Christmas profits, after seeing the huge crushes just before Christmas. But they often report disappointing figures, and what with the credit crunch scare, I fear that will almost certainly happen this time.

I hope it doesn't, even so, because poor sales figures in High Street chains tend to rattle the whole market.

It's not just shop shares which trickle backwards, but all the others run the same danger. Sentiment is a very fragile thing - and once it topples in one neck of the woods, it can be bruised in all the other sectors as well.

My policy, then, chums is to sell quite a few of my babies in the New Year, especially those that have done very well for me. Best to bank a few profits at this time of year, I think.

Then, as all the shares fall - if they do - in January, I can buy 'em back in the early Spring, when shares quite often bounce back on a tide of Spring-like optimism.

Of course, world incidents on the financial front will knock all these fine theories of mine into touch. You can't predict world events. You can only make huge generalisations, based on the way things go when nothing really happens.

Anyroad up it's time to wish everyone a Happy Christmas. But don't forget the real meaning of Christmas will you gang (if you're a Christian). And it ain't making money.

May I also wish all the other faiths, and those who don't have any, all the best for the holidays!
