THOUGHT FOR WEDNESDAY 1ST NOVEMBER 2006
From top share author MALCOLM STACEY

Hello Gang,

Get rid of your losers. That's what my grandpappy used to tell me when I was three. And he kept saying it till I was... well... the same age I am today.

What is the point of owning a losing share? Well, you might tell me that it could come back.

And yes, they sometimes do. But believe me, chums, it's far more usual to find a losing share keeps on going south. It may survive in the end - most falling shares do. But what good is that?

Your money is better freed up to invest in a share that's winning. This winning share may not be winning for long, but my plan is always to ride the winner while it's winning.

But if it levels off, I stand by the sell button. And if it drops 7% well, I ditch it like a red hot poker.

You see, I find it's much more important to manage your losers, than it is to gloat over your winners. You can fail to make any money in the golden game by ignoring losers, even if you glorify your winners.

Just ask all the punters in the... Punter's Return!
