Hello Crazy People,
Goody. I still have time to buy a few shop shares.
Those of you who read my columns about this time last year, will know I'm a great fan of buying chain store shares in December.
This is because the shops are bursting - and though this happens every year and shop profits are taken over the 12 month period like all companies, people get the idea that shops are doing especially well - just because they're full at Christmas.
If you look closely at the tills, you may realise that a lot of this milling about isn't exactly producing as many sales as you might think. But never mind, the impression that shops are coining it in is very strong in the run up to Christmas.
Yet nearly every January, the big shops report disappointing Christmas sales. And with credit card debt already high, it's quite possible that takings will also be down this year.
So my ruse is to buy shop shares at this time of the year - and sell around the period of the January sales. It might not work this year. But it has worked handsomely for me in previous years. Well, some of them, any road up.
See you in the Punter's Return, mayhap?
