THOUGHT FOR WEDNESDAY 20TH DECEMBER 2006
From top share author MALCOLM STACEY

Hello Crazy Gang,

Compliments of the season!

May we talk about shares in insurance companies. I really favour these at the moment.

Though don't allow me to influence you, if you disagree.

But this is how I see it. Insurance companies do well, as long as there is not a huge disaster, or many disasters, that they have to pay out on. As far as I can tell, there have been very few large disasters recently.

No big floods, tornados and so on. I'm very gald to say this, for obvious reasons.

But a lack of big events helps insurance companies to make profits out of premiums.

However, there's another more important reason why I think insurance companes are a nice investment at the mo. They do not just sit on the big premiums we pay them. They invest the dough - much of it in shares.

And, as we all know, shares are doing rather well at the moment. The Footsie goes from strength to strength and so do shares in the smaller companies - many of them, anyway.

So that's probably why a few big insurance companies are coming back. They took rather a powder in the crash of six years ago. Many haven't yet recovered all their poise. But perhaps they soon might. Rock on!
