The Music Industry is being stood on its head
By Adrian Roose of Stanley Gibbons

Hardly a day goes by without a Rock Group/Artist saying that they are going back out on the road. You see there was a time when the Multinational Record Companies ruled the roost... But not anymore.

Artists are back in control of their output and have direct access to their fans. The Internet, viral marketing and social networking sites are driving interest and popularity on a scale never seen before... and on a truly global basis. The Arctic Monkeys came from nowhere through the power of the Internet to be one of the most successful bands in the World.

What does this mean for Music Artists? It is all good news... For Record Companies... all bad news. The Artists were picking up on average only around 10% of the retail prices to cover all the middlemen and fat cat costs... Now they can sell direct at low prices and make more money and create a much greater fan base with continuous contact... Downloads are the technology that are bringing music to the masses.

Demand from the BRIC countries is expanding exponentially, as the size of their middle classes with more disposable income come on stream. Concerts are the key... They were used to sell CD's... but now CD's are used to promote bands and build demand for people to go to see them in concert. Concert tickets have become like Gold dust... Face values can be up to 150 pounds...with touts selling them on for thousands.

Reunion tours like "Take That" and the "Spice Girls" are selling out in minutes or even seconds in some cases. People want "Life experiences".....you will never be able to download them. Led Zeppelin say they are getting together for one benefit concert....and 20 Million people try to log on to buy tickets. Pink Floyd have just been voted top along with Led Zeppelin as the Groups Americans would most like to see on tour. The Rolling Stones seem to be continually on a World tour...

...And battling it out with U2 as to who is the largest grossing act. "The Police" were the sensation of the summer grossing $90 Million in the US alone. A few savvy companies like "Live Nation" have realised that you have to do a total deal with Artists to gain maximum payback, and handle their Concerts, Merchandising and Record sales.....and in that order of priority now.

Concerts are King...and the human dynamics and interaction with like minded fans is the experience that people want. So, there is a greater interest out there today to soak up any and all bands out there touring. Take That, The Spice Girls, Duran Duran, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, The Jackson Five, Police, Elton John, Celine Dion, Tom Jones.....the list can go on and on.

What does this mean for their Autographs? It's simple.....these groups are playing to larger and larger audiences, but they are not getting close to their fans...so demand is increasing with a reducing supply line.

We live in a World where we all want to feel part of something, and the celebrity cult endorses this. Less access....greater demand....less time for artists to sign, and less time for fans wanting to wait to get an autograph or piece of memorabilia that relates to their Idol.

As interest is rekindled in these reunion bands, fans look to buy their earlier material or signatures of earlier band members who have either died or just moved on. This makes many of the great bands, especially from the 50's and 60's, very valuable, as in the case with Pink Floyd (with Syd Barrett), The Who (with Keith Moon), The Stones (with Brian Jones), The Beatles (with John Lennon)......
