‘Here's an idea, let's have an open day’

A centre devoted to cutting-edge research is about to open the doors of a £3.5 million extension. The Sussex Innovation Centre is holding an open day to celebrate the unveiling of its "phase two" building on Wednesday.

Firms based at the centre, including share trading web site www.sharecrazy.com and Destiny Pharma scientists, developing a cure for hospital "superbug" MRSA, will be welcoming visitors. Others cover fields such as biotechnology, design media, artificial intelligence, laser development and games technology.

The new building provides an extra 20,000 sqft of space on the Univeristy of Sussex campus at Falmer. This includes a new reception area, meeting rooms, a restaurant and offices for up to 28 companies. Executive director Mike Herd said: "Of the 100 or so companies we see each year, about ten are accepted into the centre. "Most new tennant companies are at a very early stage of development, usually within their first year of trading."
