Hit or Miss? -- Shares Magazine - 12th-18th October 2000

WHO IS IT RUN BY?

Recently launched Sharecrazy.com is the brain child of Brighton businessman Alan Green. It is run by broadcaster Malcolm Stacey who has worked as an investigative reporter for Radio 4, and written two books for private investors called ARMCHAIR TYCOON and POOLSIDE TYCOON. Stacey can contribute a number of contacts in the City as well as being a dedicated share investor.

WHAT SERVICES DOES IT OFFER?

A beginners guide to share ownership, an explanatory guide to industry jargon and daily commentary from Stacey. Along with links to pertinent sites, there are feature articles, an international newsfeed and Sharecrazy Stock Alerts which can be delivered directly via e-mail, pager or mobile phone.

WHO IS IT AIMED AT?

This is definitely for the novice investor. It's 'lovable' cartoon host Joe Public is slightly endearing but aimed at those with limited knowledge of the stock market.

WHAT STYLE IS IT?

Simplistic and straightforward, Sharecrazy aims to demystify the stock market.

IS THERE A CHARGE?

No.

BEST BIT?

The discussion forums - allowing investors to share their opinions with like-minded users - are monitored by the staff 24 hours a day, to prevent 'ramping' and the appearance of offensive messages. Topics for discussion include UK Share Information, World Wide Share Information, the Investment Club Forum and an Event Discussion Forum. Registered members are contacted prior to, to contribute live.

WORST BIT?

There is not much on the site at the moment, and there is also the fact that several sites have already cornered the market on providing information and instruction for the novice private investor.

HOW USEFUL IS IT?

Useful for garnering popular opinion. In addition, Sharecrazy will launch Version 2 sometime this month which will include a section dealing with unit trusts and technical analysis.

VERDICT: HIT 7/10.

STILL IN THE EARLY STAGE.
