'Author plots girl's plight'
WESTERN TELEGRAPH - 23/04/03

The true story of a couple's inspiring fight to save the life of their daughter is told in a new book written by Pembrokeshire-based writer Malcolm Stacey. 'For the love of Alice' is the dramatic story of the battle by Dean and Carol Maddocks to find a bone marrow donor for their young daughter who suffers from a rare form of anaemia. Malcolm Stacey, who now lives in Tenby, has made more than 6,000 radio and television programmes and is best known for his investigative reports on BBC Radio 4. He was recently featured in the Western Telegraph with a story about his free, non-profit-making share website, ShraeCrazy.com, which he helps run from his home in Crackwell Street. Since Alice Maddocks of Dewsbury, Yorkshire was taken ill three years ago, Malcolm has kept in touch with her family almost daily. His book is closely based on Carol's own harrowing diary. Alice is now ten, and still searching for a suitable bone marrow donor. The Maddocks family have come to national prominence through their campaign, which has seen Tony Blair bring a change in NHS policy.

*'For the Love of Alice' by Malcolm Stacey with Dean and Carol Maddocks, is published tomorrow (Thursday) by Robson Books, price £16.95. A royalty will go to the Alice Rose Trust for Sick Children.
